A Manhattan man was arrested Tuesday and charged with stealing $35,000 worth of cash and jewelry from his girlfriend's home in Oceanside, Nassau County police said.

Jason Batista, 27, of 410 Riverside Dr., Apt. 83, was arrested after he surrendered to police at the Fourth Precinct in Hewlett, police said. He was charged with second-degree burglary.

Batista was ordered held on bail of $30,000 cash or bond at his arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead. He is due back in court Friday.

Police said that Batista had borrowed a car from his 30-year-old girlfriend, whose identity was not released, and that when he returned the car Monday at about 6:25 p.m. he entered her home on Waukena Avenue without her permission -- possibly using a duplicate key to the house.

Once inside, police said, Batista stole $20,000 worth of jewelry and $15,000 in cash from a safe. Police said the cash and jewelry were recovered.
