Cops: Man steals GPS, attacks car's owner
An Island Park man was arrested Tuesday after police said he broke into a car in his neighborhood, stole a GPS navigation system and then attacked the car's owner with a rock when the man followed him to his home.
The incident began just after midnight on California Place North in Island Park, Nassau County police said. It was then that police said a 60-year-old man saw David Hansen, 29, of Nassau Lane, "rummaging through his vehicle" parked in his driveway -- so the man went outside to question Hansen.
Police said Hansen fled, taking the GPS system.
The homeowner followed Hansen to his home on Nassau Lane and attempted to question him there. Hansen picked up a rock "and threw it at the victim," causing a cut and scrape to the forehead. The victim then walked back to his house and called police.
The victim was treated at the scene for his injuries.
Police arrested Hansen at his home and charged him with second-degree assault, petit larceny and fourth-degree possession of a weapon. He was arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead and held in Nassau County jail pending a $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.
