Cops: Man tried to rob woman outside bank
Police are searching for a man who they said attempted to rob a woman leaving a bank in Massapequa Wednesday.
The would-be robber, either in his late 20s or early 30s, is about 6-foot-tall with a thin build, a shaved head, a scruffy goatee and neatly trimmed sideburns and was wearing a light gray T-shirt, navy-blue sweatpants and worn black shoes.
Nassau County police said the woman he attempted to rob told them the man lifted the front of his shirt to show her the handle of a handgun before she ran off -- and he fled, too.
The incident occurred outside the Chase bank branch on Carmans Road at 11:55 a.m.
Police said the victim, identified only as a 37-year-old woman, told them she was in the front lobby using the ATM when she noticed the man "watching her." When she exited the bank she said the man approached her, grabbed her pants pocket and demanded cash. She said when the man showed her the handgun handle and threatened to shoot her she turned and ran away.
The man then fled.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
