Cops: Mastic mom charged in store robbery
They stole DVDs from a local Walmart by placing them in a diaper bag belonging to their 3-year-old, police said.
Then when stopped by security personnel, the father pulled a knife, swung it at the security guards and after the weapon was knocked to the ground the mother picked it up - and threatened an officer with it, police said.
Police said the incident occurred on Dec. 14 at the Walmart on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa.
The man, Fred Puryear, 39, was arrested at the scene, Nassau County police said.
The woman, identified by police as Bernadette T. Robledo, 30, was arrested Sunday at the couple's Mastic home on Burney Boulevard and charged with first-degree robbery, fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
She is scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
Police said Puryear had been charged with first-degree robbery and endangering the welfare of a child upon his arrest.
He was arraigned on Dec. 15. The status of his case was not immediately known Monday.
Police said the incident took place at about 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 14 when the couple "selected numerous DVDs from a display rack, put them in a diaper bag and left the store."
The loss-prevention officers then approached the couple, at which time they said Puryear pulled the knife, police said.
A struggle ensued, police said, and the knife fell to the ground. Robledo picked up the knife and threatened one of the security guards with it, police said. No one was injured, police said.
