Two children were taken to the hospital Sunday after their mother accidentally accelerated her car and hit them in the driveway of their Cedarhurst home, Nassau County police said.

The two boys, ages 10 and 2, were playing in their driveway on Cedarhurst Avenue at about 4:55 p.m. when their mother, 35, was trying to back her sports utility vehicle out of the driveway, police said.

Instead of going backward, police say the mother went forward and hit her sons.

The 10-year-old was transported by helicopter and the 2-year-old by ambulance to a local hospital. Both were treated for nonlife threatening injuries, police said.

The vehicle was impounded for a brake test.

No criminal charges were expected, police said.
