Cops: Nassau police officer seriously injured in red-light crash
A Nassau County police inspector was seriously injured Friday afternoon when his vehicle was broadsided by a car that ran a red light in Woodbury, authorities said.
Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun, commanding officer of Nassau’s Public Information Office, said the crash, which occurred shortly before 1 p.m., was caused after a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta heading north on Yukon Drive drove through a red light, hitting the side of the inspector’s unmarked black 2010 Ford Crown Victoria that was heading east on Woodbury Road.
The inspector had the green light when the crash occurred, LeBrun said. The impact shattered his windshield and caused the air bags to deploy, he said.
The inspector’s name was not released, but sources identified him as Robert Psoinas, commanding officer of the Second Precinct.
Acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said the inspector was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. Krumpter and Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano went to NUMC Friday afternoon, Mangano spokesman Brian Nevin said.
A hospital spokeswoman said Friday night the inspector was in critical but stable condition.
The driver of the Jetta, a 36-year-old Woodbury man, also was taken by ambulance to a hospital, LeBrun said.
