An NYPD recruit shot at his girlfriend then fatally turned the gun on himself in his Hempstead home Friday night during a domestic dispute, police said.

The 26-year-old recruit inflicted a minor graze wound on his girlfriend, who did not go to the hospital, Hempstead Village police said.

The recruit, whose identity was not released, was found dead in the basement of the home, police said.

The shootings occurred just before 7:30 p.m. Friday at a home on Beverly Road.

The fatal shooting has been ruled a suicide, Hempstead police said.

Neighbors said the couple moved into the apartment only recently, and kept to themselves.

"Everybody looks out for everybody on this block" but "no one knows them," said Cynthia Jackson, 50, who lives a few houses away.
