The shooting occurred at the Best Buy store parking lot about 5 p.m. when officers from the Nassau police Bureau of Special Operations approached a white minivan suspected in several recent larcenies in the area, police said. Valuables such as wallets and laptops left in parked cars were stolen, police said.
The van was first blocked in by two unmarked police Jeeps, officials said, and then officers walked to the van.
"Apparently he sees the police officers closing in on him and attempts to get out of the situation," said Insp. Kenneth Lack, the police spokesman.
He tried to maneuver away, striking one of the Jeeps twice, and then almost striking an officer who was on foot.
When the driver tried to get away, one officer fired a shot, striking him in the right leg, police said.
The suspect was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, police said. Officers were also treated for minor injuries. The suspect's name and condition were not disclosed.
