Cops: Operation nabs 3 sex offenders
Three sex offenders were charged with failing to register properly during a six-week sting in which Nassau police and the U.S. marshals visited the homes of 80 convicted sex offenders, authorities said.
In "Operation Double Check," authorities targeted Level 2 sex offenders in Nassau to ensure they had provided all the information necessary under the New York State Sex Offender Registry Act, such as accurate home address, updated email address and photos.
Level 2 offenders, defined as those at moderate risk of repeating sex crimes, must register for life, and one missing detail means they've broken the law.
Teams of deputy marshals and Nassau detectives conducted visits from April 1 to May 18, including 13 homes located in villages.
Three people were arrested and indicted on felony charges for failing to register, authorities said. In a news release, Nassau police did not identify the three suspects.
"Today, the population is 100 percent accounted for and that's our goal," said Charles G. Dunne, the U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of New York.
Nassau County Police commissioner Thomas Dale called the Operation Double Check a "very successful joint mission."
