A mother and daughter were arrested in Jericho Wednesday after the two stole a pocketbook and merchandise from the shopping cart of a woman loading her 2-year-old into a car at Birchwood Plaza, police said.

The incident took place outside the Marshalls store on Broadway at 7:58 p.m.

Nassau County police said that, as the toddler's mother loaded her child into a car, Gladys Smith-Pinto, 58, and her daughter, Gladys Smith, 38, both of Pine Hollow Road in Oyster Bay, stole the woman's pocketbook and purchases from her cart.

The victim returned to the store to alert security, who contacted police. Arriving officers found Smith-Pinto and her daughter and made the arrests after questioning them, police said.

Both were charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and are scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
