A 78-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured when a vehicle struck him early Saturday in Oceanside, Nassau County police said.

The victim was hit as he crossed at a traffic light from the west side of Long Beach Road at Bellevue Avenue to the east side of the street, police said.

The 38-year-old male driver, who was heading north on Long Beach Road, struck the victim in the right lane with his 2015 Ford Explorer around 7:25 a.m., police said.

The victim, who was pushing a shopping cart, was taken to a hospital with a serious head injury. Police said the pedestrian did not have a known address.

Police did not identify the driver or the victim.

The driver, who had the green light, remained at the scene. There doesn't appear to be criminality involved in the accident, police said.
