A 79-year-old pedestrian has a serious head injury after being hit by a minivan in Hicksville Tuesday as she tried to cross a major roadway, Nassau police said.

The woman had parked her vehicle in the parking lot of the Plainview Shopping Center and was halfway across South Oyster Bay Road when a 1998 Plymouth Voyager struck her in the southbound lanes, police said. The accident happened at 11 a.m., police said.

The woman was taken to a hospital, police said.

The van driver, a 43-year-old man, had tried to stop, and at the scene, authorities checked the brakes on his Plymouth before releasing the minivan to him, police said.

No criminality has been found in the accident, police said, and the investigation continues.
