A pedestrian died after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing a street against the light in Freeport on Saturday night, Nassau police said.

Police said Gustavo Peinado-Ruano of Freeport was crossing Merrick Road at South Main Street at 11:22 p.m. when he was hit by a 2002 Chevrolet Astro van driven by 23-year-old Steven Greene of Roosevelt.

Peinado-Ruano, who police said was crossing the street against the traffic signal, suffered serious head injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The van was impounded for testing, but police said they don't suspect any criminality in this case.
