Detectives are investigating an accident early Wednesday in Hempstead involving a pedestrian who ran into a moving cab, leaving him seriously injured.

A 69-year-old man was driving the taxi south on North Franklin Street near Orchard Street at 4:18 a.m. when an unidentified male who was running across North Franklin from west to east "had a collision with the front passenger side" of the cab, Nassau County police said in a news release.

"As a result of the accident [the pedestrian] suffered head trauma and was transported to an area hospital where he was admitted for treatment," police said.

Police said there was "no apparent criminality involved."

Police are trying to determine the identity of the man, described as Latino, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, "with a thin build and short dark hair." He was wearing brown work boots, light brown pants, a bubble jacket, and a collared shirt with blue and yellow stripes, police said.

The cab "underwent brake and safety checks at the scene" and was returned to the driver, police said.

Detectives urge anyone who may know the victim's identity to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
