Police are investigating a Thursday afternoon bank robbery in Hempstead, the latest in a string of such heists this month on Long Island.

Hempstead Village Police Lt. Francis McNamee said a call came in shortly after noon reporting a robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank branch on Fulton Avenue.

A male suspect "walked in, demanded money, and the teller handed over what she had in her drawer," McNamee said.

Detectives said the robber, described as about 55 years old with a salt-and-pepper goatee and mustache, "stated he had a gun but never displayed one," Nassau County police said in a news release.

The suspect stole an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot, heading north on Hilton Avenue, police said. None of the eight customers and five employees in the bank were injured, police said.

Nassau County police officials on Thursday said two roommates from Melville are responsible for some of the wave of recent bank robberies in Nassau and Suffolk, committing eight of the 22 heists so far this month. The roommates were arrested Wednesday on multiple robbery charges.

Detectives urge anyone with information about the latest robbery to anonymously call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
