Two elderly pedestrians were struck and seriously injured Tuesday afternoon while crossing a South Farmingdale street, authorities said.

The pedestrians were struck about 3:45 p.m. while apparently crossing Main Street near Carmans Road, officials said.

Assistant Chief Michael Dauth, of the South Farmingdale Fire Department, said both of the department's ambulances responded about 3:45 p.m. to an emergency call of " 'Two elderly females struck by a pickup truck.' "

The ambulances transported the women who were in "serious condition" to the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, Dauth said, and police "shut the road down for a crime scene investigation based on the injuries."

Nassau police said the accident was being investigated, but there was no apparent criminality involved.

Dauth said a senior citizens residential complex is nearby on one side of the street.
