Detectives are investigating a robbery Thursday night in a trash disposal room at a Massapequa shopping mall.

A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman entered the room at the Sunrise Mall, 850 Sunrise Hwy., at 10:40 p.m. to deposit refuse, Nassau County police said in a Friday news release.

While inside they were confronted by a male "who threw the male victim to the ground and kicked him multiple times," police said. "The subject removed an envelope containing an unknown amount of U.S. currency from the male victim's pocket and grabbed two handbags the female was holding."

The suspect fled "on foot westbound through the mall parking lot," where the handbags were later recovered, police said.

Seventh Precinct police officers and aviation and canine units searched for the suspect but could not find him.

Neither victim was injured.

Seventh Squad detectives urge anyone with information about the crime to anonymously call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
