A 24-year-old man was shot once in the leg by a gunman who entered his car Monday in Hempstead, trying to take the victim's keys before being rebuffed, Nassau County police said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was transported to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound, police said.

The gunman is being sought.

Police said the shooting occurred at the corner of Nassau Parkway and Allen Street just before 7:30 p.m. Monday.

It was then, police said, that the gunman, wearing a white shirt, entered the car, a 2001 Honda, and tried to take the keys. Police said the driver put the car in gear, but that the gunman then shot the driver.

The gunman then fled.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
