They rang her doorbell and told her they were there to check her water quality.

But a suspicious 31-year-old Baldwin woman on Thursday night did not open her door to the two strangers, a man and a woman, who insisted the inspection would only take a half-hour. Instead, she reported the 7:40 p.m. incident to Nassau County police.

The two suspects fled in a gray or silver Nissan sport utility vehicle, police said.

Police are asking anyone who might have information regarding the suspicious incident at the home on Chestnut Street to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.

All calls will remain confidential, police said.

Police said the two suspects are a man and a woman and said the woman is believed to be in her mid-40s with shoulder-length dark, curly hair that has blonde highlights. She wore sunglasses, police said -- and spoke Spanish to the victim. The man is also believed to be in his mid-40s with short black hair and is about 5-foot-6 with a thin build.

Police said he wore a black leather jacket and dark jeans.
