Cops: Queens man charged in Elmont break-in
A Queens man who attempted to break into an apartment in Elmont and fired a round from a handgun that lodged in a sofa is under arrest police said.
Nassau County police said Rashidi Smith, 27, of 253-08 148th Ave., Rosedale, has been charged with attempted burglary and criminal use of a firearm. He was to be arraigned Friday in First District Court, Hempstead.
Police said Smith attempted to break into an occupied apartment on Covert Avenue Thursday at 6:55 p.m. and fired a single round from a handgun through a basement window. The bullet lodged in a sofa.
Smith fled, but was arrested at 1 a.m. Friday, police said.
No one was injured.
