A Lynbrook couple was robbed on Saturday after agreeing to roof repairs by a man who knocked on their door offering the service, Nassau police said.

Police said the couple, described as "elderly," were at their Peninsula Boulevard home when a man in his 50s arrived at about 5:15 p.m. and offered to repair the couple's roof for $350.

The couple agreed, and also allowed two women -- one described by police as being in her 60s, the other in her 40s -- and a girl of about 6 to rest inside the home to stay cool while the repair was being made rather than continue to sit in the man's black pickup truck.

The couple retrieved $350 from a savings container, put the lid back on, then placed the container in the sink, police said. The pair were then distracted when the man asked to use the bathroom.

After the group left, police said the couple noticed that the container had been moved to the countertop and an indeterminate amount of money was missing. Police said it also didn't appear as if the roof repairs had been made.

Police ask anyone with information about this grand larceny to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-244-TIPS.
