A counterman at a Chinese restaurant in New Cassel was shot Monday night by an assailant who approached the register, demanded money and then fired at the employee when he refused to hand over the cash.

Nassau County police said the shooting was at the China King restaurant on Prospect Avenue at 10:12 p.m.

The employee was shot once in the abdomen and was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was admitted in stable condition, police said. His condition was not immediately available Tuesday.

Police said the suspect fled without getting any cash and was last seen headed north on Magnolia Avenue.
