A man with a history of mental illness was arrested Monday night, charged with spray painting graffiti on the side of a building in Roosevelt, police said.

Serge Delaleu, 43, of 129 Forest Ave., Roosevelt, was remanded on bail of $7,500 bond or $3,750 cash at his arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead on charges of third- and fourth-degree criminal mischief as well as two counts of making graffiti. He is due back in court Thursday.

Nassau County police said Delaleu was arrested at his home at 6:22 p.m. Monday. Police said the arrest followed "assistance" from the public, but did not provide additional details.

Using paint, Delaleu wrote racially biased statements on the side of the Western Beef building at 332 Nassau Rd. at 11 a.m. Saturday, police said.
