Cops: School bus driver faces aggravated DWI charges

A school bus driver with four students aboard is facing aggravated drunken driving charges after he crashed into a parked car Friday in Farmingdale, Nassau police said.

Michael Asseng, 47, of Deer Park, was driving a GMC Omnibus on Midwood Avenue when he crashed shortly before noon, police said.

No injuries were reported.

The students on the bus ranged in age from 6 to 12, police said. Their school was not identified.

Officers determined that Asseng's ability to drive was impaired and he was arrested at the scene, police said. After having difficulty breathing, Asseng was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Police said Asseng is employed by ACME Bus Corp., which could not be reached for comment.

Asseng was charged under Leandra's Law with four counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired by drugs, officers said.

The arraignment had not been scheduled. Police said it would be conducted either in the hospital or at First District Court in Hempstead.
