Nassau police are looking for a man who they say broke into the bedroom of a Great Neck 15-year-old girl Sunday morning and held a wet cloth across her face.

At about 5 a.m. Sunday, the girl was sleeping in her ground-floor bedroom of a West Shore Road home when she awoke and found a man sitting on top of her and holding the rag to her face, Det. Lt. Kevin Smith said Monday.

The girl struggled and broke free of the man, who then ran through the house and out a back door, Smith said.

The girl alerted her mother, who was sleeping upstairs, Smith said. As the two approached the back door, they saw a pair of hands reaching into the house but the man fled, Smith said.

The man, described as 5'8" and with curly brown hair, is believed to have entered through a front window, whose screen had been cut and disposed of, Smith said.

A black or navy blue baseball hat emblazoned with "USA" and decorated with eagles and flags was found under the girl's bed, Smith said. The hat is being examined for forensic evidence.

The rag is also being examined to determine what substance it bears.

The girl was uninjured except for a slight bruise to her face and declined medical treatment.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. Callers may remain anonymous.
