Cops seek man who gave up on Elmont bank robbery

Detectives are investigating an attempted bank heist in Elmont Friday afternoon in which the would-be robber handed over a demand note but gave up before the teller could comply, police said.

The unknown man entered Apple Bank, 1693 Hempstead Tpke., at 1:36 p.m., "approached an employee and presented a demand note," Nassau County police said in a news release. "After waiting several seconds for the teller to comply, the subject left the bank without any proceeds."

The suspect fled on foot, southwest through the bank parking lot and south on Sewanee Avenue, police said.

None of the six people in the bank at the time -- all workers -- reported being injured, police said.

Police described the would-be robber as in his 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, "wearing a dark-colored hoodie style sweatshirt with two large skulls on the front, a dark-colored baseball cap, sunglasses and blue jeans."
