A registered Level II sex offender was arrested Sunday in Hempstead and charged with sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child and forcible touching stemming from an incident with a 16-year-old girl, police said.

Ned Barnes, 25, of Wheatley Heights, attempted to make inappropriate contact with the 16-year-old as the two sat in his car in November. Police said that when the girl pushed Barnes' hand away he exposed himself. Later that month, police said, Barnes sent the girl an inappropriate picture via a cell phone communication.

Police said Barnes, of 19 Landscape Drive, is a registered sex offender in the state.

He was arrested in Hempstead at 2 p.m. and charged with forcible touching, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and third-degree sexual abuse. All are misdemeanor offenses, police said.

He is scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
