Cops: Son nabbed in dad's chokehold death
A Uniondale man put his father in a deadly chokehold Saturday during a "physical altercation" that killed the older man, Nassau County police said in announcing the son's arrest on a manslaughter charge.
The son, Ervin R. Witherspoon III, 21, fled after the father, Ervin R. Witherspoon Jr., 47, became unconscious about 1 a.m. at a home on Westbury Boulevard in Hempstead. The father was pronounced dead at a hospital about 2 a.m. Police caught up with the son hours later and arrested him about 8:30 a.m., police said.
Police did not say whether they knew what triggered the fight or how they found the son.
The son, of James Place in Uniondale, is to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead on a second-degree manslaughter charge.
