A Hempstead man stopped for speeding on the Southern State Parkway Tuesday in North Valley Stream faces a drunken driving charge, State Police said.

James Meyers, 36, was driving a gray Nissan at 81 mph east on the parkway near Fletcher Avenue, Exit 14, at about 11:20 p.m., police said.

When troopers interviewed Meyers they "detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage," according to a news release.

Meyers failed sobriety tests and was arrested. He produced a breath-analyzer reading of .10 percent, police said.

He is charged with DWI and traffic violations and is scheduled to appear at First District Court in Hempstead on Nov. 29.
