Cops: Suspicious fire at Seaford's Tackapausha Preserve

Arson detectives Sunday night were investigating a suspicious fire on county property, Nassau police said.

Police said they received a 911 call about 6:55 p.m. regarding a fire at a small storage building on Seaford's Tackapausha Preserve, an 84-acre wildlife preserve on the South Shore which, according to the Friends of Tackapausha website, was the first tract of preserve land to be acquired by the county, in 1938.

The building, on Merrick Road next to Tackapausha Pond, was substantially damaged by the fire before members of the Seaford Fire Department were able to extinguish the fire, police said.

No injuries were reported, and the fire is under investigation. Police said anyone with information could call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.
