Cops: Suspicious package turns out to be nothing

A police investigation of a suspicious package that forced the evacuation of the Plandome Long Island Rail Road station and a post office Friday turned up nothing, Nassau County police said.

"The package was deemed to be nothing," of consequence, a police spokeswoman said.

The package, described by one official as "a black briefcase," was discovered at the U.S. Post Office in Plandome at about 8:30 a.m.

A railroad spokeswoman said the LIRR and post office share a building at the station -- and police said that building and the nearby railroad platform were evacuated.

Nearby Stonytown Road also was closed for investigation.

The area was deemed safe at about 10:40 a.m., after an investigation by police Emergency Services Unit personnel.

The LIRR said service was suspended on the Port Washington branch between Great Neck and Port Washington during the evacuation and closures. That service suspension lasted about a half-hour before being restored at about 9:35 a.m. Residual service delays followed the restoration of service, the railroad said.
