Cops: Teen arrested after running stop sign in stolen car

A Freeport teen was arrested Sunday night after an officer saw him run a stop sign in a stolen car, police said.

Charles Siebert, 16, of 29 North Columbus Ave., was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer, reckless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving a motor vehicle unattended, and open door interferes with traffic. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.

A juvenile in the car also fled on foot. He has not been charged.

The incident began at 8:24 p.m. Sunday when a Freeport police officer on patrol spotted the 1994 Honda failing to stop at a stop sign at the corner of South Ocean Avenue and Ray Street, Nassau police said.

When the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, police said Siebert attempted to flee "at a high rate of speed." When Siebert exited the car at an undisclosed location he placed it in reverse, placing the officer "in jeopardy of being struck," police said.

Siebert was arrested after a short foot chase, police said.

The officer was not injured.
