Cops: Teens charged in cash-for-gold scheme

Three Mineola teenagers have been arrested on charges they schemed to sell stolen jewelry to a cash-for-gold shop in Carle Place, Nassau County police said Tuesday.

Third Squad detectives said two of the teens, Nicholas Dafgard and Olivier Kachtiane, both 17, stole the jewelry from friends and relatives and then turned it over to Jeffrey Tomaz, 19, who sold it to the Carle Place shop.

Tomaz, of 60 Brown St., was found to have sold the stolen jewelry on several occasions to Cash for Gold at 215 Glen Cove Rd., a Third Precinct study of crime patterns in the area showed, police said.

Dafgard, of 23 Crandall Dr., and Kachtiane, of 5 Greentree Rd., are each charged with third-degree grand larceny. Kachtiane also is charged with second-degree burglary. Tomaz is charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

At arraignment Tuesday, both Dafgard and Kachtiane got a conditional release to probation, were sent to the adolescent diversion program and given a May 2 court date. Tomaz was also given a conditional release to probation and ordered to show up for court Thursday.
