A suspect stopped for questioning in a theft investigation punched a police officer, injuring him, before being arrested in Seaford early Tuesday.

Nassau County police said Joseph Larocca, 23, of Stirrup Path, Seaford, punched the officer with "a closed fist."

The officer was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for contusions to his left elbow, wrist and hip, police said. He was later released.

Police said Larocca suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The incident began when officers responded to a call reporting a larceny at a 7-Eleven on Merrick Road in Seaford at 2:58 a.m. Officers learned that the suspect had just left the scene and a short time later, spotted Larocca -- who they said matched the description.

When the officer went to question Larocca on Hillarie Way, police said the suspect struck the officer with his fist.

After a brief struggle, Larocca was arrested. He is charged with second-degree assault, petit larceny and resisting arrest. He was arraigned Tuesday, released on a $2,500 cash bail and is due back in court Thursday.
