Cops: Traffic stop uncovers 50 pounds of pot

A traffic stop of a car with an expired out-of-state registration led to the arrest of a Pennsylvania man Tuesday in East Garden City -- and the discovery of more than 50 pounds of pot in his car, police said.

Deshawn Reilly, 35, was charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana, as well as a vehicle and traffic law infraction after the stop by a Nassau County police Third Precinct officer on Ring Road just before 2 p.m.

Police said the officer stopped Reilly's car because of an expired Georgia registration, but soon became suspicious of a boxed package inside the vehicle. A K-9 unit was called to the scene and a search by a drug-sniffing dog, Jax, indicated a "positive alert" for drugs, police said. Further investigation indicated the box was the source of that alert, police said, and a search of the package found "in excess of 50 pounds" of marijuana.

Reilly was arrested without incident, police said.

Reilly faces arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
