Cops: Trio charged in attack in Oceanside home

Three men who broke into a house in Oceanside late Sunday to assault a man with whom there was "an ongoing dispute" attacked three men, leaving one with a broken nose and another with a possible broken hand, police said.

The attackers didn't get far: Two of them were arrested on the block as they attempted to flee the scene on New Street in a 2010 Nissan Frontier. The third was arrested about a half-hour later after being tracked by a helicopter and a canine unit, Nassau County police said.

Arrested were Rufino Salles Jr., 42, of Merrick Road, Rockville Centre, his brother John Salles, 41, of Cammerer Avenue, East Rockaway, and Michael Garcia, 35, of Jefferson Avenue, Rockville Centre, police said.

All were charged with first-degree burglary and three counts of second-degree assault.

All three are scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said the trio entered the home through a rear door just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Once inside they attacked the three men, ages 46, 23 and 20, police said.

All three victims suffered lacerations, police said.

In addition, the 23-year-old suffered a broken nose and the 20-year-old a possible broken hand, according to police.

The status of those injuries was not known Monday.

Following the attack, police said Garcia and John Salles attempted to flee in the Nissan, but were caught while still on New Street. Police said Rufino Salles was caught while hiding under the axle of a tractor trailer at 11:51 p.m.

The nature of the alleged dispute was not known.
