Nassau police are investigating two bank robberies that happened within two hours - one in Elmont, the other in Hempstead.

The heists occurred Friday afternoon, police said. Police provided two different descriptions of the robbers.

A man robbed the Bank of America branch at 1431 Hempstead Tpke. in Elmont at 12:22 p.m., police said. None of the six workers and eight customers in the bank at the time was hurt, police said.

The suspect was described as a 6 foot-tall man with a medium build. He was "wearing a black scarf which covered his head and face, a blue button down long-sleeved collared shirt and jeans," police said in a news release.

The second robbery occurred at 2:11 p.m. at a Wachovia Bank branch at 145 Fulton Ave., Hempstead.

None of the nine workers and two customers in the bank at the time was hurt, police said.

The suspect was described as a black man, about 5-feet-6 inches to 5-feet-8 inches tall, 40 years old with a stocky build, police said. He was wearing a dark-colored baseball hat with exposed dreadlocks, jeans and a black T-shirt.

Detectives urge anyone with information about either crime to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will be kept anonymous.
