Cops: Victim gives man ride, gets robbed

A 42-year-old Baldwin man was arraigned Saturday on felony charges after he pulled a knife out and robbed the man who was driving him home from a bar in Freeport, police said.

Kennedy was displaying an 8-inch knife, police said, and the victim complied, handing over $20 to $30.

Kennedy said it wasn't enough and the victim then fled the vehicle, police said.

Driving the victim's car, Kennedy fled northbound on Woodcleft Avenue, passing a responding Freeport police officer at Merrick Road and the Meadowbrook State Parkway, according to police.

The officer followed the vehicle northbound on the Meadowbrook and attempted a traffic stop near Sunrise Highway. Kennedy did not stop, but continued northbound on the Meadowbrook and then westbound on Babylon Turnpike, police said.

Kennedy stopped the car and fled on foot to Lakeview Avenue where he attempted to enter the rear yard of a home but was blocked by police, with whom he struggled, but then was arrested, according to police.

Arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead, Kennedy was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
