Cops warn: Fireworks illegal in N.Y.

A reminder to Fourth of July enthusiasts: If you go boom, you may get busted.

"All fireworks are illegal in the State of New York," and those who possess, use or sell them -- sparklers included -- could be charged with a misdemeanor or felony, says a media advisory from the Nassau County Police Department.

Nationally, fireworks-related injuries resulted in an estimated 6,200 visits to hospital emergency rooms last year in the month surrounding the Fourth of July, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Of the four deaths recorded for the year, two occurred on July 4, according to the safety commission.

Parents are advised to talk to children about dangers associated with fireworks, says the media advisory.

About 26 percent of last year's injuries during the weeks around July 4 were to children under 15, the safety commission says.
