Quick thinking by a woman targeted by two would-be robbers in a Baldwin parking lot Tuesday afternoon scared off the alleged perpetrators, who were stopped by police and arrested a short time later.

The attempted robbery took place at 5:30 p.m. in the lot at 2277 Grand Ave., just south of Sunrise Highway.

Nassau County police said the intended victim, identified only as a 31-year-old woman, was sitting in her parked vehicle when she looked in the mirror -- and saw two masked men approaching her car. Police said the woman put the car in reverse and began to back up, screaming as she did.

The would-be robbers removed their masks and fled, police said.

Police said responding officers found one suspect, a teen, about 45 minutes later, hiding in some bushes on Florence Street. The other suspect was located about two hours later in the rear yard of a home on New York Avenue.

Arrested were Shabazz Oliver, 16, of 679A Brooklyn Ave., Baldwin, and Allen Sanders, 20, of 171 Jay St., Freeport. Each was charged with second-degree attempted robbery, police said.

Oliver and Sanders face arraignment Wednesday in First District Court, Hempstead.
