A man punched a 38-year-old woman in the face before robbing her of her purse while she was walking on North Main Street in Freeport on Thursday shortly before dawn, the police said.

The victim had refused to let go of her purse until the punch forced her do to so. She declined medical attention.

The robber fled north on North Main Street, taking an unknown amount of cash from the victim, and her personal papers.

The suspect was described as thin, and about 6 feet tall; he wore a black sweater with red and white patches and a thick gold chain.
