A 21-year-old woman walking along a street in Garden City was attacked from behind Tuesday night by a man who stole her pocketbook containing a cellphone, iPad and cash, Nassau County police said.

Police said the woman, whose identity was not released, was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries to her head and knees.

The attack occurred on Somerset Avenue near Weyford Terrace at 7:45 p.m.

During the attack police said the woman was pushed to the ground. The attacker, described as having a thin build, wore burgundy-colored sweatpants, a black sweatshirt and a black ski cap, police said.

Police said that after the attack the assailant fled on foot.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
