Cops: Woman struck, killed on Sunrise Highway

A 56-year-old woman crossing Sunrise Highway in Merrick early Wednesday was hit by a car and killed, Nassau County police said.
Susan Reffke of Merrick was crossing Sunrise near Hewlett Avenue when she was hit by a 2008 Toyota traveling west in the right lane, police said.
Reffke was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where she was pronounced dead at 8:51 a.m.
The Toyota was impounded for a safety inspection, but no charges have been filed against the driver, a 46-year-old woman, police said.
Police said there was "no apparent criminality" in the case.
The accident occurred at 6:25 a.m.
Westbound Sunrise Highway was closed at the site of the accident for several hours but was reopened by midmorning Wednesday, police said.
