Nassau County police are trying to determine who tried to burglarize and set fire to a Uniondale home late Monday.

Arson / Bomb Squad detectives said a woman, 58, called 911, reporting that someone had tried to break into her home on Arcadia Avenue at about 9:45 p.m.

The woman first heard her doorbell ring, then someone knocking, police said in a news release.

She was afraid to answer the door, police said, and a short time later, heard a screen ripping at the rear of the house.

After calling 911, she went downstairs to find a napkin burning in the dining room under a window where the screen had been ripped.

Police arrived and found that the rear door had been broken when someone tried to force it open.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.
