Counties open cooling stations; some pools, beaches to stay open longer
To help residents beat the heat, both counties have opened cooling stations, and some state and county beaches and pools will be open later Tuesday.
Cooling stations are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the next two days. Residents without air-conditioning can go to the stations to cool off if they are in need of some relief.
In Nassau, cooling stations are at the North Massapequa Community Center, 214 N. Albany Ave. in North Massapequa, and at the Sandel Senior Center, 50 S. Park Ave. in Rockville Centre.
Suffolk has opened a cooling station at the Islip Senior Citizen Center, 16 S. Second Ave., Brentwood. The center is close to public transportation, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy said.
At state park beaches, such as Robert Moses, Jones Beach, Heckscher and Sunken Meadow, lifeguard hours have been extended an hour until 8 p.m. through the week and until 7 p.m. at the West Bathhouse pool, officials said.
Nassau's four major swimming pools will also be open longer than usual. The pools at Cantiague and Christopher Morley parks will be open until 7 p.m. Wantagh Park's will be open until 7:45 p.m. and North Woodmere's pool will be open until 8 p.m.
"Nassau County's outdoor pools provide residents with a terrific place to exercise, have fun and beat the heat, and with the temperatures climbing to particularly oppressive levels, we're going to provide an extra hour of relief," Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said.
Nassau pools are only open to county residents, and there is a fee. Visit nassaucountyny.gov/parks or call 516-572-0200 for further information.
Here's some information on what other localities are doing to help residents to keep cool:
Brookhaven: Hours at the Centereach and Holtsville pools and the Cedar Beach, West Meadow Beach, Corey Beach and Davis Park will be extended until 7:45 p.m.
Huntington: Crab Meadow, Centerport and Quentin Sammis West Neck beaches will stay open until 8 p.m. if there are a large number of swimmers at the location. The Dix Hill Pool is open until 8 p.m.
Southampton: Hampton Bays Senior Center will be a cooling center until 9 p.m. Residents can call 728-1235 for shuttle service to the center if they don't have any other transportation.
Village of Hempstead's pools are free to residents Tuesday. A cooling station has been set up at Kennedy Park with water and air-conditioning for residents.

All pools will be extended one hour to 8 p.m., except the Town Park at Sands Pool and Roosevelt Pool, which will close at 7 p.m.
North Hempstead: Pools are open until 9 p.m. and perhaps later if the need arises, town officials said. They offer these cooling stations for residents: Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park, Great Neck Senior Center in Great Neck, North Hempstead Community Center in Port Washington, Town Hall in Manhasset, all town libraries, Great Neck House in Great Neck, Herricks Senior Center in New Hyde Park, Port Washington Senior Community Service Center in Port Washington, and Westbury Senior Center in Westbury.
