An elderly Wantagh couple remained hospitalized Sunday after they were injured Saturday in a fire that destroyed their home.

Officials have not identified the man and woman, both 80, who were pulled from their two-story Hannington Avenue home by rescuers and taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

The man was listed in critical condition in the hospital's burn unit, and the woman was listed in stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Sunday.

A neighbor said she called 911 after she saw smoke coming from the house just before 2 p.m. Saturday.

Rescuers broke down the door to rescue the man, who was unconscious in a front room with burns, and his wife, who had smoke inhalation.

Officials have said they don't know what caused the fire, but the Nassau County police arson and bomb squad said that the fire was not suspicious.

The couple's pets, a dog and a cat, died in the blaze, fire officials said.
