A Wantagh couple who escaped from a fire at their home on Friday, were later hospitalized for smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

The husband and wife, who were not identified by police, heard the smoke alarms go off at their Hawthorne Drive West home at 11:15 p.m., Nassau police said.

The wife escaped from the roof near the front of the home down a Nassau police ladder, said Harry Loud, spokesman for the Wantagh Fire Department. The husband was saved by Wantagh firefighters, who took him down the ladder in the rear of the home, Loud said.

The couple's son, who lived in the basement, escaped from the blaze unharmed, police said.

Firefighters also rescued the family's dog, who was trapped on the second floor, Loud said.

The couple was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.
