Westbury man charged in fatal East Garden City crash, Nassau police say

A Westbury man faces manslaughter and driving while intoxicated charges in connection with a crash in East Garden City that killed the driver of a van and injured two, Nassau police said.

James Skow, 57, was driving a 2019 Ford F650 flatbed east on Stewart Avenue at 3:53 p.m. Monday when he struck the rear passenger side of a 2020 Toyota SUV, according to police. The Ford continued on, police said, veering west into oncoming traffic and hitting a van. The driver of the 2001 Ford van, identified only as a male, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A 54-year-old woman driving the SUV and her passenger, a 16-year-old boy, were taken to a hospital but police released no updates on their injuries or condition Wednesday.

Skow was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, police said Wednesday.

Nassau police initially sent out a news release Monday night that contained multiple errors regarding the crash, the vehicles involved and the deceased. Police sent out multiple updates Tuesday with the corrected information.

Skow appeared in First District Court in Hempstead Tuesday with bail set at 10,000 cash bail or $5,000 bond, officials said. The case was adjourned until Friday.

The investigation into the crash is continuing, police said.
