DA: Holiday weekend DWI crackdown in Long Beach
Holiday weekend drunken driving enforcement starts Saturday in Long Beach, officials said.
The program, announced Thursday in a news release from Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas and Long Beach Police Commissioner Michael Tangney, will be staffed by officers specially trained in field sobriety tests and will include pulling over drivers suspected of drunken or drugged driving.
Long Beach police will also be observing patrons leaving bars, marinas and other establishments for signs of possible impairment, and warning them of the consequences of drunken driving or boating, officials said.
The same program will also be implemented for the Fourth of July and Labor Day holiday weekends.
Three people were arrested on DWI charges during Memorial Day weekend last year in Long Beach. In 2015 seven people were arrested in Long Beach, officials said.
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano on Thursday also announced that “additional police officers have been assigned to extensive STOP-DWI enforcement initiative for the Memorial Day weekend.”
