Cops: Stolen handgun seized in traffic stop

A Hempstead man tried to hide a stolen loaded handgun Thursday during a traffic stop and then ran from the scene before being arrested on weapons charges, Nassau County police said.
Darrell Walker, 26, of 680 Fulton St., is charged with second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, police said.
Walker was a passenger in a car on Long Beach Road in Hempstead at about 11:21 p.m. when it was stopped by members of the Nassau's Critical Incident Rapid Response Team Task Force, police said.
The driver, Giovanni Pisano, 57, of 658 Waypark Ave., Uniondale, had violated vehicle and traffic law and had a crack pipe containing crack residue, police said.
He is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Walker hid the handgun -- a loaded Hi-Point automatic reported stolen by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina -- under his seat before running off and being caught by police, according to a news release.
Walker and Pisano are scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
